Battle of the Bulge You may have heard the expression "midriff bulge" used to describe a person with an extended or protruding abdomen. Other terms people use are "beer belly", "pot belly", and "beer gut". Having too much fat around the mid-section is not the only cause of this extension. It could also be a build-up of toxic fecal matter in the intestines and colon that is contributing to a chronic outward swelling of the person's belly. This condition some people call bloating is NOT the stomach making the belly stick out, for the stomach is located ABOVE the transverse colon, beside the liver. It could be the COLON (large intestine) expanding for various reasons and it could also be impacted fecal matter building up inside. Obviously, cleaning out and impacted fecal matter that might be in your own body could contribute to a slimming of the abdomen and some significant weight loss. The average healthy person who is not constipated can carry about 5 pounds of fecal matter in their intestines and colon at any one time. Some people carry 6 to 12 pounds but don't show the symptom of bloating because the colon will first drop down internally before it starts to expand outwardly when even more toxic waste can accumulate. Most people who are aware of the need for "colon cleansing" do not realize that this layer of toxic waste called mucoid plaque can build up throughout their digestive tract from stomach to rectum. Getting a colonic, colon hydrotherapy, colon irrigation, or high enema treatment using water under pressure only helps clean out the last 5 or 6 feet, yet does nothing for the 22 feet of the small intestine.
If you do not regularly have a bowel movement at least once every day you could be classified as chronically constipated - and that is probably going to create health problems!
Consider how human babies have a bowel movement shortly after each feeding. They do not have any mucoid plaque in their digestive tract (yet) so the food and waste passes normally and quickly through their GI tract. It is not the recently eaten food that is so quickly coming out the other end, but some food waste products are always coming out as fast as the new food is going in.
That should be a benchmark for "normal". Are you eliminating waste after every meal - or just once per day? Or once every two days? Three times a day would be healthy, but few of us these days have that healthy a digestive system.
The National Institute of Health published a survey which showed 4.5 million Americans are constipated most or all the time. In the USA, over 2.5 million doctor visits per year are made by patients who complain of constipation.
In a normal, healthy body, the passing of stools should be almost effortless. You feel the urge, you sit on a toilet, and the stools come out on their own. If you are waiting, pushing, and straining to get them out, your body is not normal or healthy. You are constipated.
In earlier times, when people lived an active life working on farms and ate only unprocessed foods and unpasteurized dairy products, the typical transit time of food through the digestive tract was 15 hours.
Today, with processed foods lacking enzymes and natural fibers and loaded with refined sugar, combined with a more sedentary and less active lifestyle, the transit time is slowing down drastically.
That increase in "transit time" from 15 to up to 40 hours means that for several DAYS toxic waste is remaining inside your body. Now you can understand why you will be absorbing more toxins, building up more mucoid plaque, and suffering from many more diseases than your grandparents ever did. This is why gastrointestinal diseases are highest in the industrialized countries like the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
These are things we don't normally want to talk about or hear about - but the condition of our colon is vital to our health and well-being. And when things go wrong, illness can occur. Doctors are familiar with that ancient medical advice from Hippocrates: "Death begins in the colon."
You may not hear people talking about their colons, but you can easily see the effects of a clogged colon in all those big bellies and bulging midriffs - and see how "widespread" this problem has become in our modern society. A "colon cleansing" is essential to maintaining good health - and contributes to a trim and healthy appearance!
Cleaning your colon and rectum may also be the best preventive measure you can take against the risk of colorectal cancer, pre-cancerous polyps in the colon, and those painful diseases of the colon known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Diverticulitis, Ileitis, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which includes Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Today, doctors have no known medical cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Ulcerative Colitis (other than surgery). It looks like prevention is your only option. Between 25 percent and 40 percent of people with ulcerative colitis eventually need colostomy surgery in which part or all of the colon is cut out and removed. In the USA, over 100,000 colostomy surgeries are performed each year to remove part or all of a diseased colon.
Medical doctors tend to treat the symptoms of a diseased colon with drugs or surgery, without getting to the real cause of the problem. Has your doctor ever told you how to PREVENT these diseases before they happen to you?
It's really up to YOU to take charge of
your health and well-being. Using a natural
colon cleansing therapy such as cleansing your colon and
gastrointestinal tract with an Herbal Tea Blend is a simple, easy,
and pleasant way to start. It's as easy as drinking two glasses of
good-tasting tea per day!

Malva Leaf (aka "Chinese Mallow" )
The word "malva" is derived from malakos, which in Greek means "soothing"; not surprisingly, malva tea is often given as a gargle to reduce throat inflammations. Drinking the tea also helps calm stomach and intestinal irritation. Warm compresses can draw toxins from pimples, abscesses and other skin inflammation while cool tea compresses can help to relive superficial burns. The leaves of Malva sylvestris, otherwise known as blue mallow, are rich in mucilage. The mucilage of M. sylvestris is made up of high molecular weight acidic polysaccharides (Classen B, et al., Planta Med 64(7): 640-44 (1988)). The leaf tea is traditionally believed to be useful as an anti-inflammatory, decongestant, humectant, expectorant, and laxative. It has also been used internally for soothing sore throats, laryngitis, tonsillitis, coughs, dryness of the lungs, and digestive upsets. Mallow is also used as a poultice for healing wounds and skin inflammations. In traditional medicine, mallow leaf tea is also used against abnormal growths of the stomach and to alleviate urinary infections (Bisset NG (ed). Malvae folium--Mallow leaf. In Herbal Drugs and Phyto-pharmaceuticals (1994, CRC Press, Stuttgart, pp 313-316).
Malva seeds contains mucilage, polysaccharides and flavonoids. In traditional medicine, the Malva leaf was often made into a tea to sooth the membranes of the digestive system. It is a demulcent (the mucilage soothes and softens irritated tissues, especially the mucus membranes), mild diuretic, emollient (softens the skin), and a mild laxative (a gentle stimulant of the bowels). Malva Leaf teas are used in the treatment of renal disorders, the retention of fluids, frequent thirst, and diarrhea. Malva Leaf has been used to treat stomach ache, gastroenteritis, irritable bowel, and conditions of the spleen. The Chinese use Malva Leaf as an expectorant and as a demulcent gargle to soothe a sore throat. It can also soothe a bronchial irritation in persons with bronchitis or emphysema. (Beware of Chinese Mallow teas which also contain Senna or Cassia angustifolia. which are strong laxatives and can create dependency. Dr. Miller's Holy Tea does NOT contain Senna. The seed contains mucilage, polysaccharides and flavonoids. It is demulcent, (soothes and softens irritated tissues, especially the mucus membranes) diuretic, emollient, (softens the skin) galactogogue (increases milk flow in nursing mothers), and gentle stimulation of the bowels. The seeds are used in Tibetan medicine, where they are considered to have a sweet and astringent taste plus a healing potency. They are used in the treatment of renal disorders, the retention of fluids, frequent thirst and diarrhea. The weedy Malva Leaf has been used interchangeably for food, tea and medicine for thousands of years. The Aztec's used Malva Leaves for Bronchitis, Tonsillitis, Gastroenteritis, Pleuresia (Inflammation of the membrane that covers the lungs), Leucorrea or White Discharge, Inflammation of the Cervix, Inflamed Hemorrhoids, Colitis, Rectiti, Intestinal Infections, Cutaneous Diseases and to Soften Tumors and Abscess.Malva Leaves are contained in Holy
Tea

Persimmon
Leaf
Eating persimmon leaves inhibits weight gain and lowers lipid levels
Scientists believe that the rich fiber and phenolic content of persimmon leaves, which are commonly used to make tea in India, increases the amount of lipids removed from the body as feces. "Since the persimmon leaves have beneficial effects on hemostatsis, constipation, hypertension, apoplexy, and atherosclerosis, they have been broadly applied in food and medicine," says J Lee, from the Ottogi Research Center in Kyonngi-do, The Republic of Korea and colleagues. To investigate if the leaves also improved metabolism and lipid levels, the team fed three groups of rats either a normal control, high-fat, or high-fat with powdered whole persimmon leaf diet, for 6 weeks. Eating the high-fat diet without persimmon leaves increased the rats' body weight by an average 114% in comparison with those fed the normal control diet. However, rats eating the persimmon leaf supplemented high-fat diet had a final body weight similar to that of the normal control group after 6 weeks. "Thus indicating that persimmon leaf supplementation suppressed the excess body weight gain that could be induced by high-fat feeding," say the authors in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. They added that these rats gained less weight because persimmon leaf consumption suppressed their food intake, perhaps via the hormone leptin, levels of which were higher in the leaf-supplemented group than the high-fat only group. Blessed Thistle and
Holy Thistle
Blessed thistle is also known as
holy thistle, St. Benedict thistle, cardin, and spotted thistle.
It is a handsome annual, a native of Southern Europe, occurring
these in waste, stony, uncultivated places, but grows more readily
in England in cultivation. This herbaceous annual has been
cultivated for centuries as an alternative medicinal herb. It was a
component of many herbal The ancient Romans ate the leaf fresh and boiled the root as a vegetable. Thistle was once used as a nutritious fodder for cattle in Scotland, and the leaf, folded between two slices of buttered bread, was eaten with the breakfast meal. British and German Pharmacopoeias recognize that 'bitters', including blessed thistle, stimulate bile flow and cleanse the liver. In Europe, blessed thistle, as a "bitter vegetable drug" is considered to be a medicinal agent used to aid digestion and promote health. The herb contains B-complex vitamins, calcium, iron, and manganese. Blessed
Thistle is considered by many contemporary herbalists and in
traditional folk use as a tonic, astringent, diaphoretic (increases
perspiration), emetic (induces vomiting), and stimulant. Both the
blessed thistle and milk thistles are recommended as a liver tonic,
particularly when the liver disease is brought on by alcoholism. It
has been used in treatment of jaundice and hepatitis.
A tea from the leaves, taken warm, will increase perspiration, reduce congestion, and help to bring down fever. A mild infusion is astringent and may relieve diarrhea, but a very strong infusion is emetic and may cause nausea and vomiting. Blessed Thistle may help regulate female hormone balance and relieve menstrual pain. Blessed Thistle has also been used to treat the vaginal discharge known as leucorrhea.
Blessed Thistle is said to relieve melancholy and lethargy, and was traditionally fed to mentally ill persons. It acts to increase blood circulation and aids memory. Applied externally in poultice form, Blessed Thistle is a good treatment for shingles, wounds, and ulcers. The plant has antimicrobial properties. The essential oil has been shown to have antibiotic action against infections, specifically Staphylococcus aureus and S. faecalis. Historically, Blessed Thistle has been used as an alternative medicine and has been recommended as a treatment for stomach upset, indigestion, constipation and gas. Some individuals employ this herb, as they would its cousin milk thistle, as a remedy for gallbladder and liver disorders. However, there is only limited clinical evidence to support it use medicinally. Notwithstanding, many individuals report that Blessed Thistle is an effective medicinal healing herb. A few studies show that blessed thistle may be useful as an anti-inflammatory. Medicinal Action and Uses - Tonic, stimulant, diaphoretic, emetic and emmenagogue. In large doses, Blessed Thistle acts as a strong emetic, producing vomiting with little pain and inconvenience. Cold infusions in smaller draughts are valuable in weak and debilitated conditions of the stomach, and as a tonic, creating appetite and preventing sickness. The warm infusion - 1 OZ. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water - in doses of a wineglassful, forms in intermittent fevers one of the most useful diaphoretics to which employment can be given. The plant was at one time supposed to possess very great virtues against fevers of all kinds.
It is said to have great power in the purification and circulation of the blood, and on this account strengthens the brain and the memory.
Turner (1568) says: 'It is very good for the headache and the megram, for the use of the juice or powder of the leaves, preserveth and keepeth a man from the headache, and healeth it being present. It is good for any ache in the body and strengtheneth the members of the whole body, and fasteneth loose sinews and weak. It is also good for the dropsy. It helpeth the memory and amendeth thick hearing. The leaves provoke sweat. There is nothing better for the canker and old rotten and festering sores than the leaves, juice, broth, powder and water of Carduus benedictus.' Topically, a poultice of blessed thistle is used to soothe skin irritated by burns, scrapes, shaving, sunburn, and other relatively minor injuries. A poultice is usually a soft cloth that has been soaked in a medication, possibly heated, and applied to an aching or injured area of skin surface. Precautions: As with most medicinal herbs, they should not be taken during pregnancy. Children under two years should not be given the herb. Lactating women should consult with a qualified herbalist or health care provider before using the herb Do not confuse blessed thistle with its cousin, milk thistle Cardus marianus, they are two entirely different plants, despite the fact that they share a common name (holy thistle), and both are known for supporting the liver. Blessed
Thistle and its close cousin, milk thistle, are both excellent

Marshmallow
Root/Leaf
Mallow has expectorant and demulcent properties, which accounts for this herb's historical use as a remedy for the respiratory tract, particularly in cases of irritating coughs with bronchial congestion. Marsh Mallow root and, to a lesser extent, Marsh Mallow leaf both contain significant percentages of mucilage, a natural gummy substance that does not dissolve in water. Like other mucilage-containing substances, Marsh Mallow swells up and becomes slick when it is exposed to fluids.
Herbs high in mucilage, such as Marshmallow, are often helpful for symptomatic relief of coughs and irritated throats. Mallow has expectorant and demulcent properties, which accounts for this herb's historical use as a remedy for the respiratory tract, particularly in cases of irritating coughs with bronchial congestion. Marsh Mallow may also have mild anti-infective, immune-boosting, and diuretic properties. In the British Herbal Compendium the use of Marsh Mallow is listed for gastroenteritis, peptic and duodenal ulcers, colitis, and enteritis. Topically, Marsh Mallow is used to soothe and soften irritated skin, and as a remedy for cuts, wounds, abscesses, boils, burns, and varicose veins. The edible leaves are used as salad greens in France. It is an old-time remedy for bladder infection, digestive upsets, fluid retention, intestinal disorders, kidney problems, sinusitis and sore throat. Marshmallow is a natural source of beta-carotene, amino acids [amino acids are the "building blocks" of protein], minerals and vitamins and is often used as a filler in the compounding of pills.
Primary chemical constituents in Marshmallow include substantial mucilage, polysaccharides, flavonoids (quercetin), kaempferol, asparagine, tannins, lecithin and pectin. The great demulcent and emollient properties of Marshmallow make it useful in cases of inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal and of the urinary and respiratory organs. Recently, Marshmallow has been used as an expectorant to treat a variety of upper respiratory problems. Marshmallow also contains large amounts of vitamin A, calcium, zinc and significant amounts of iron, sodium, iodine and B-complex vitamins. Like slippery elm, Marshmallow reduces inflammation and has a calming effect on the body. Topically, marshmallow is used to soothe and soften irritated skin. It also sooths irritation and inflammation caused by bronchitis, urinary tract infections, colitis and other problems such as constipation.

Healing Crisis Information: You May Feel Worse Before You Begin to Feel Better... The Road To Better Health may Begin with a Healing Crisis (There are a couple of books that have tons of information about the healing crisis. They can be purchased at most any bookstore. The Healing Crisis and Trauma with Mind, Body and Spirit and The Healing Crisis are two books about the subject.) As you move toward better health with natural healing programs and better nutrition, healing begins to occur. As part of the healing process the body will begin to discard toxic residues which have built up in your body over the years. The healing process usually does not occur without repercussions. During the initial phase of healing, as your body begins to clean house, (detoxify) and your vital energy begins to repair and rebuild internal organs, you may experience headache, uneasiness, flu like symptoms and fatigue. It is important that you adequately rest during this time. These symptoms will pass as your body begins to normalize to a new level of health. As you continue to improve, you may begin a process called retracing. You may feel worse before you feel better. For example, if you used to get skin rashes, the rashes may reappear or get worse for a period of time as your body eliminates toxins through the skin. You may also experience an initial increase in urination, or you may feel more nervous. In actuality, you are not getting worse, you are actually getting better. Eventually you will reach a plateau of better health. During the healing crisis, it is important to not suppress these temporary symptoms with drugs or the healing process may become interrupted. Understanding The Healing Crisis
The body has an inherent desire for perfect health. We have the ability to earn our way back to that state, no matter how "normal" or bad our health is now. But in the meantime, the body must go through an elimination process to achieve good health. The elimination process is often referred to as the "healing crisis." Once the healing crisis starts, reactions may be mild or severe. Expect ups and downs as it takes awhile to get good health back. In a healing crisis, every body system works together to eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration. Old tissues are replaced with new. A disease occurs when the body cannot make it through its natural healing crises for one reason or another. The body is "locked" into a destructive and shut down place, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Symptoms of the healing crisis may at first be identical to the disease it is meant to heal. But there is an important difference: elimination. A cleansing, purifying process is underway and stored wastes are in a free-flowing state. The body, mind, and spirit are no longer "locked." Sometimes pain and symptoms during the healing crisis are more intense than that of the chronic disease, but it is temporary and necessary.
Physical reactions could include skin eruptions, nausea, headache, sleepiness, unusual fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, head or chest cold, ear infections, boils, or any other way the body uses to loosen and eliminate toxins. An initial healing crisis usually lasts around three days but if the energy of the patient is low, it may last a week or more. Your body needs juices, and especially water to help carry off the toxins. This is a time for rest. Be kind to yourself --- mentally, emotionally, and of course physically. One crisis is not always enough for a complete cure. The person in a chronic "locked" disease state will often have to go through cycles of healing crises, with each one improving the condition some. It has taken time to develop a chronically diseased state, and time is required to let go of the "locked" energy, piece by piece. It's like peeling the layers off an onion.
With a more serious condition, there may be many small crisis to go through before the system can become healthily balanced. Everything must be considered and given its proper place in the build-up to a healing crisis. One should expect it and work with the body, not resentfully against it. A healing crisis is also known as the Herxheimer Reaction which occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. A healing crisis can result from any holistic/natural therapy such as homeopathy, naturopathy, improved diet, etc. more The reversal process is another part of the healing crisis. It is necessary to revisit each step the body has been through that brought it to its current state of dis-ease. People learn from an early age that symptoms are bad and should be stopped or suppressed. They take all kinds of drugs to stop their bodies from eliminating catarrah and waste. This is very confusing to the body! Mucus production is the body's perfect mechanism for taking out the garbage! If that process is suppressed, the immune system is compromised and the next time it doesn't work quite so well. The body has it's own memory and it remembers all the injuries and all the times it was suppressed. In the reversal process these memories are brought to light in reverse order from which they happened and people re-experience illnesses and traumas in a phenomenon known as retracing. The difference this time is that the symptoms come and go quickly and there is an underlying sense that the whole process is not threatening, that it is natural and health promoting. The healthy changes people feel after a healing crises remain as long as a health supportive lifestyle is embraced, as long as one continues to honor the remarkable and extraordinary intelligence of the body. Give the body what it needs to constantly create strong new tissue and the reward will be wonderful health and vitality. Herxheimer Reaction (The Healing Crisis)The Herxheimer Reaction occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. [v] When this occurs, one will suffer from headaches, nausea, vomiting, and malaise. Even though this is but a short period of the health program, it can be severe and deter one from reaching their intended goals. Also, the person may not know what they are experiencing and think that they are regressing. To minimize the Herxheimer Reaction:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HEALING CRISIS AND ILLNESS? There are symptoms during a healing crisis that may be confused with illness but the difference is that these symptoms are short in duration and move from one part of the body to another, from inside out and from top to bottom. There is usually a lack of appetite and may be a fever. Illness is a very different scenario where one or more of the organs are not working well, causing toxic build up of waste material that can't get out. There is fear during illness, a feeling of being out of control as opposed to the prevailing feeling during a healing crisis that underneath all the symptomology everything is working just the way it should and everything is really OK. The reversal process is another part of the healing crisis. It is necessary to revisit each step the body has been through that brought it to its current state of disease. People learn from an early age that symptoms are bad and should be stopped or suppressed. |
